As a consummate investigator who pays close attention to macroeconomic trends in relations to developments of cities, the burgeoning Mexican art scene has been poised to dominate the region’s creative developments for some years now. The rise of dedicated collectors and patrons, the increase in cultural funding (grants, awards, public and private museums, cultural sponsorships etc.), the heightened awareness and interest in supporting local artistic and design communities, and many other factors cement Mexico City’s position as a major player in the regional and international art and design markets.
This past February, with the invitation of Spanish gallery Travesia Cuatro (with gallery outposts in Madrid, Guadalajara and Mexico City), my friend Clara Andrade Pereira (Director of Pablo’s Birthday) and I travelled to Mexico City, Guadalajara (for “Pre-MACO”, the weekend prior to ZONA Maco, sprinkled with studio tours and other festivities) and other surrounding cities. My trips to Mexico have historically left me feeling incredibly rejuvenated, and this one was no different. I highly recommend including CDMX in your next trip.
